We live in massive castles
walls of prejudice
ramparts of pride
towers of scrutiny
battlements of disbelief
We hide behind these things and more,
that take the shape of
sports teams and clearance racks,
glass screens and selfie sticks,
books of faces kept at a distance,
anything that helps put our best foot forward,
with low risk and high reward
remaining safely indoors
in our comfy, climate-controlled castles.
Even the least of us knows
that our egos are all we own.
In this world:
I show, therefore I am.
Only show the castle and the king.
And deep inside the vault -
hide the songbird, hide the poet,
hide the lonely, hide the lover,
hide the empty, hide the weak.
